While we offer many treatments for skin rejuvenation at Glendale Dermatology, PRP is one of the most interesting. PRP, or platelet-rich plasma therapy, takes advantage of the healing and growth factors of your own body to improve the look and condition of your skin.
What Is PRP?
Platelets are the structures in your blood that work to heal the skin when you receive a cut or similar injury. PRP therapy applies this healing factor directly to areas of the skin that need it the most, such as skin on the face that is suffering from sun damage, wrinkling, hyperpigmentation, or other issues.
What Does PRP Treatment Do?
PRP treatment can improve both skin tone and skin texture, helping promote tighter skin, reduce the appearance of aging tired looking skin and more.
How Does It Work?
The procedure is very simple. We take a small amount of blood from your body, not even as much as you would give for a basic blood test. We then use a centrifuge to separate out the platelets and create a solution which we use to return the platelets to the target area. The next step is to use our microneedling device on the target area, creating many, very small micro injuries in order to induce healing and encourage new, healthy skin growth. Finally, we introduce the PRP to the newly treated skin to allow the skin to heal in a healthier and more even textured and toned manner.
Why Is PRP Superior to Other Skin Rejuvenation Methods?
One of the great benefits of this treatment is that it comes from your own body, meaning you don’t have to worry about any kind of rejection or ill-effects stemming from having a foreign substance introduced into your system. If you are suffering from persistent acne, acne scarring, other scarring, hyperpigmentation issues, sun damage, wrinkles or similar skin conditions, you may benefit from PRP.
Does PRP Hurt?
We will numb the area before microneedling to minimize any discomfort. There will be a slight pinch when we withdraw the blood, but the re-introduction of the PRP itself should not be painful.
What Is the Recovery Time? Are There Any Side Effects?
You should expect some mild swelling and redness, and possibly light bruising following the procedure, which should all fully resolve in about five days or less. You can resume most activities immediately following the procedure.
What Kind of Results Can I Expect?
Depending upon where you are receiving PRP, you should see noticeable results within 3-4 weeks of treatment. Results continue to improve with time and we recommend at least 3-4 treatments spaced 1-2 months apart for best results.
What Does It Cost?
The cost of this treatment varies depending upon the severity of your skin conditions, the size of the treatment area and the number of treatments. We can better estimate the cost of your treatment after your skin consultation.
